Bruised For Our Sins

“He was wounded and bruised for our sins…and we were healed.”   Isaiah 53:5 ( TLB)

A fall on uneven pavement is rarely graceful. Mine produced a blooming black eye just before Easter. I whined; how could I stand and sing in the choir with a black eye? The pity-party ended when God reminded me that Jesus willingly bore his wounds and bruises for me.

Jesus, God with us, made himself of no reputation pouring himself into mortal, human form. Full divinity in fragile, flawed, flesh. God planned it that way from the beginning of time. He chose to come to earth by the miracle of Mary’s conception and Jesus’ birth. Jesus, this God-man, bore the evidence of our fall and our sin in his flesh when he willingly died for us on the cross.

Jesus could have called down ten thousand angels to avenge him. He did not.  He could have said forget it. I’m out of here. He did not. with humility and grace he submitted himself to the will of God. In power and victory he rose again…for us. Jesus Christ, beaten, battered, bruised by and for our sins put to death forever the image of a stone-faced, unmoving, unchangeable and uncaring God.

How do I respond to a love like this?

Images Through the Fire

Flames rose high all around the cross
but the cross, rising higher still,
burned with a pure light of its own
and kept on rising until
the flames barely touched
the foot of the beam;
then transformation came.
On the cross was now our risen Lord
and clothed in white garments unstained
he moved through the fire,
his form all aglow; rising still higher above
he cried “This war is won!”
Conflagration below overcome
in His power and love.

Cross Purpose

Truthfully,

Jesus had to die on Calvary.

No other way

would get God’s point across.

His personal touch

was to give His only Son.

How else could we find

Jesus here today

across all of time?

Heaven’s loss was our gain.

God loves each of us that much.

Honestly!

Son-rise

When problems pile up we want to cry “enough!” But  think of all the raw material for books, poems, stories, devos, articles, etc.

Just before Thanksgiving 2011 my car was totaled. Thankfully the injuries were minor. Well….the weekend before Christmas I was in North Carolina signing books for “Faith Lifts: When Life Lets You Down.” After dinner I tripped and broke two bones in my left hand. The day ended with six hours in the ER.

Isn’t it just like Satan to try to deter us from our calling in Christ? He is the author of doubt,  deception, discouragement, disappointment, depression, darkness and despair.  He’s rightly called the Devil.

Self-pity was planning a not-so-pretty party when the Lord reminded me that he always has everything under control.

Before having open-heart surgery several years ago I was given an image of my heart filled with light, held in God’s hands. That picture carried me through the weeks to come.  Later, after a heart attack, I again questioned God. “I  remember the light filling my heart. Now it seems to be full of holes! What happened?” His immediate reply: “The holes are there so my light will shine through.”

The world needs all the light it can get in dark places. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” As Christians we are given responsibility to reflect that light and we do that when we have the Holy Spirit living in us, shining through us.

Darkness flees from that light…take the Light and run!

     SON-RISE*

In darkness there is light

invisible to human eye

But claim it

deep within your soul

and burning bright,

fed by love’s eternal flame

illuminate the night.

The Tree

A

tree

laden

with gifts

and promises.

Evergreen sprinkled

with lights and ornaments.

A star

glitters at the top

symbolic of another gift

and a promised Light

born on that first Christmas night.

A Christmas Story…

There’s just too much to do this time of year! Shopping, cards, decorate the tree, on and on and on. Are there enough presents for everyone? Don’t want anyone to feel slighted.  Even the cat expects a gift or two; a little catnip never hurts

What? A gift for Jesus? There’s plenty of time. After all it’s the thought that counts, and I do think about him, really.

We go to church, now and then. Like Thanksgiving. Well, we almost got there. We wanted to give thanks for a year of good health (except when Billie fell out of that tree and all the kids got the flu at the same time). But, you know Thanksgiving is a hectic holiday. and after all Black Friday starts at midnight. So we didn’t get to church, but it’s the thought that counts; right?

Did you say something? You really need to speak up. What? “Remember Me.”

Well, remember last Easter? We all had new outfits and looked so good and the church was overflowing with people we hardly see any other time of the year. Everyone was so “egg-cited” Ha! Get it?

Listen. It’s almost Christmas, right? So last week I looked for that little plastic nativity set we gave the kids when they were little. That’s odd, I thought I heard you say something again. “Remember Me”.

That’s what I’m trying to tell you…I finally found that old manger set…everythings there but baby Jesus, he’s missing.

I wonder what happened to him…I just can’t remember

Celestial Symphony

CELESTIAL SYMPHONY

Heavens song

came to earth

on Christ’s birth-day;

one clear note

in a babys cry

for all eternity.

A wiseman sees,

a shepherd hears,

a fisherman follows;

 a sin-full world

turns a deaf ear.

But a listening heart

two thousand years away

becomes aware and joins

with one clear note

the Hallelujah chorus.

A NAP IN TIME SAVES NINE

The next time you catch your cat napping, which is pretty much all the time, take the break to hone your writing skills and compose a paragraph or more using only one syllable words…have fun!

One slow, smooth stretch eases the arch in the back to a long, lax slide straight down to splayed toes pinned to the rug. Head nods twice, then drops flat on soft white paws, claws now sheathed. Blue eyes not quite closed, stare as if to say “come on, touch me if you dare…” Soon glazed orbs blink and form a thin slit. But one small wary cat is still keen to see a move close at hand (or paw). with a wide, full yawn the jaw snaps to a thin grin; with one lush sigh of purr, cat at rest lets the world know that all is well once more. Now for a nice long nap filled with sweet dreams of big, fat mice ripe to eat. Good night my soft, sweet prince, sleep well.

In all Things, Give Thanks

Murphy’s law lives! If anything can go wrong, it will. So what is a Christian to do? Give thanks to the Lord in all things.

That’s what Thanksgiving is about, before commercialism, materialism, consumerism, and focus on Black Friday were introduced. Now Thanksgiving seems to be a dash between Halloween and Christmas shopping.

A recent visit with Murphy’s law brought me back to the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

It’s a short drive to church and that evening I was anticipating a new class and good fellowship. Turning into the church driveway I swerved to avoid another car…except there is no roadway where I turned. Only a deep, wide ditch.

My car briefly took flight then descended straight down. It was a hard landing; very hard. The seat belt worked well and locked quickly. Unfortunately my body was still moving. Knocked the breath out of me. This is not good when youre just recovering from bronchitis, have had heart surgery and have nine metal stents propping arteries open. Tests in the ER showed no broken bones but bruised chest muscles really hurt; bent eyeglasses don’t clarify anything and are hard on the head.

My car needs major adjustments but I really need an attitude adjustment.

Now let’s see. Noah built an ark as floods covered the land and he came out on the other side singing “Somewhere, Over the Rainbow”; Job lost everything and still declared “I know God can do all things, no plan of His can be thwarted.” Daniel walked through fire with the Lord beside him. David commanded his soul to bless the Lord as he ran from King Saul who was out to kill him. Paul sang praise in prison.

Jesus refrained from complaining and blaming as he was unjustly accused, he did not wallow in self-pity as he pruposely walked to Calvary and hung on the cross; yet people today still ignore, ridicule, and crucify him over again in spite of what he did for them.

I thank my God for testimonies in the midst of trials , for praise in spite of painful, perplexing circumstances. Thank you Lord, that the battle belongs to you but the victory is ours. Thank you that you turn what Satan means for evil into our good.

Thanksgiving

Father God, thank you

for your magnificent creation;

every intricate snowflake,

each simple drop of dew,

a new-born baby’s cry,

and the kitten’s mew.

Thank you.

For each infinitesimal

glittering grain of sand;

every whispered “I love you.”

Thank you.

For things that surpass

my limited imagination…

like points of refracted light

bound in radiant bows

thrown across the sky.

For hummingbirds flight fantastic;

for bumblebees with wings

too short to fly, yet they do.

Thank you…

for family and friends

near and far away.

Most of all, thank you

for your most amazing grace

and the love that sacrificed

your Son to rescue me

Thank you.
